Siting in the garden, beer in hand, listening to AWB Album, 'Access All Areas', a live recording.

Queen of my Soul highlights two things. Hamish''s amazing vocals and just how tight AWB were musically. I still feel that, in their day, they were masters of their trade, the UK's finest!

Hamish's and Alan's harmonious vocals were absolutely amazing.

Hamish, AWB, thank you for laying down the soundtrack of my life!

Feel no Fret did have a lot going on and was made very much the way we always preferred with everybody around the whole time which always got the best results although not everybody sat in on vocal sessions as we got near completion on things.
Person To Person was a good 'un. Although we recorded 3 shows we got very lucky in getting the bulk of the album from one show in Cleveland, giving it the continuity it has.
I always said never say never but I think I can now safely say it will never happen even if hell freezes over.

Hi Hamish,
I have always LOVED your music and your voice, so when I learned you would join Wix' AllStarBand I just had to come and see you live. So I flew from Southern Germany to London, enjoyed a stay in a lovely B&B and had the time of my life at the Concert at the Kings - what a bliss!! It was AWESOME to see you and the other GREAT musicians from front row and to hear you play some of my favourite tunes. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Cheers and much love from your German fan

Off to the Marlowe theatre in Canterbury tonight to play with Tex Mex pals Los Pacaminos. It will be a hoot as usual. Hope I can find my fave big hat and that my 'lead guitar' chops show up? Jamie Moses is awol so I'm it!
Been a while since we've seen each other so it will be good to see everybody and have some fun. Maybe even stretch to a shot or two of Tequila - Who Knows?
Adios for now.

Hi Peter,

Glad you found Let It Snow. I will be doing a few shows in Kent this summer but probably wouldn't be carrying that cd (without a reminder) due to the seasonality of it.
I recommend waiting till early December before giving it an airing.

All the best and happy listening.

As I said before Vivian Cherry was part of the NY session singer scene and her and Patti Austin did so much work together. Vivian, myself, Yolanda and Luther did a little show together in an Off Broadway supper club round about 81 maybe. Luther had just done his album with Never Too Much and A House Is Not A Home and was about to take off! We each did two songs, those two being Luther's. I did Whatcha Gonna Do For Me and Growing Pains from that AWB Volume 8. Vivian did a great version of a Pages song and having that vocal arranger head on came up with a great Soul take on Christopher Cross's song Sailing. We had so much fun on those two shows we did. the band was superb of course with Mr. Ferrone plus Loweko Harper on bass and Georg Wadenius who played on the recording of Never Too Much. We had a ball singing together and I just wish the night had been recorded or filmed, however it will remain in the 'Soul Camera'.

I see you mentioned you'll be doing a few gigs this summer in Kent. I live in Kent and would to know where you're playing so i can come and see you and the band. I saw you last year at Ronnie's and the 360 gig at Worthing (brought the CD by the way). Both were fantastic gigs.

At last the 360band album "360" will be released July 14th. It has already been on a pre-order with Pledge Music and also available from record label 3Ms site where die hard fans have been picking up on it.
The band won't tour till at least late October due to other commitments so keep your eyes peeled for info and pick this record up when you can.
We had a ball making it and look forward to more people finding out about it.

That clip on the Kenny Everett Show came from the Brixton Academy, where we filmed a whole show miming to playback, to no audience which was definitely one of the strangest things I've ever done. It's a big old cavernous place and when it's empty in the winter-ha,ha. Bloody freezing. Particularly when you're wearing a paper boiler suit. Hilarious.

Date Posted: 05:54:50 02/28/17 Tue

I had a sad start to the day today with news of Leon Ware's passing. This guy was a very positive influence on the music of AWB and continues with my music.
He was on the first sessions we ever did in the US with Bonnie Bramlett and contributed the song This World Has Music which never made Bonnie's album but made our first record Show Your Hand. A couple years later the Quincy Jones album Body Heat was released and yet another of Leon's tunes made it's way into our repertoire and became a central part of our live show - If I Ever Lose This Heaven was tailor made for us.
What followed next was Leon's classic with Marvin Gaye I Want You. Harmonically inspiring stuff which is still influential.
He wrote lot of songs and I think began as a staff writer at Motown, writing for The Isleys and other acts on the label.
After the breakup of AWB Leon and myself did some writing but the last time we worked together was a tribute to Marvin at Midem in 92. Leon was the musical director and had a stellar rhythm section of James Gadson, Chuck Rainey, Wah Wah Watson and Clarence Henderson plus strings and horns. Chaka, Al Jarreau, Randy Crawford and Omar all performed and I did Grapevine (of course) then Leon did some of the I Want You songs with El De Barge, Marvin's daughter Nona and myself on background vocals. It was quite a night and Leon was truly at the top of his game but unfortunately it was the last time our paths crossed.
He has toured the UK with Bluey and Incognito but unfortunately work schedules never enabled me to catch any of those shows.
Leon Ware had a unique musical voice and a wonderful harmonic sensibility which continues to inspire.
Thanks for all the music Leon.

There have been a couple of wrongly posted show dates for Lockerbie next week.
Please ignore them and check these dates----360 will be at the Lockerbie Jazz festival on Friday the 23rd and the following evening Saturday the 24th will be at the Darvel Music Festival.
This is fact, no matter who or what internet post says different -- Please ignore and see you at either venue.

Hamish.

Will try my best to get to the Worthing gig on the 29th, but its just 2 weeks after I get my new hip... so a couple of questions:

How's the access for an ambulance / mobility scooter / wheelchair / zimmer frame at the end of the pier ?
Can I leave my ambulance / wheelchair / mobility scooter........ backstage during the gig ?
Do you offer any sort of "collect and return" service to Worthing Hospital ?
Is the disabled viewing area still side stage, by the Green Room ?
Any chance of a VIP pass ? !!

Hope to see you in a couple of weeks . All the best. Simon

Hello everybody! Nothing from me for a long time. When listening to Steve Quirk's programme on Colourful Radio between 10a.m. and noon today, he played three songs selected by Hamish which were 'Queen of My Soul', 'Would You Stay' and 'Watcha Gonna Do for Me'. In the second half of the show, he chatted with Hamish about 360 Band. Steve Ferrone and Molly Duncan have joined Hamish and have a release date for their debut album - 25th September. Steve played two tracks from it which were 'Easier Said than Done' and 'Mighty Fall'- great new version of that one. Lovely to hear Hamish sounding relaxed and happy about the new project.
Tom Carr tell's me that 360 Band are to appear at Lockerbie Jaz festival on 23rd September and then Hamish's band at Darvel on 24th.
It's a great idea - good luck with it all Hamish.
Best wishes to everybody. Hazel Farrell Manchester

Just saw AWB in Las Vegas (minus of course Hamish, Molly and Roger) on Saturday night at the Alliante Hotel and Casino. I was surprised at how good the show was. My wife surprised me with the tickets and I didn't have the heart to tell her I didn't want to go (knowing Hamish wasn't on vocals). However, the guy they have singing Hamish's parts had an outstanding and powerful voice with great range -- they lucked out finding him. The horns were great too. Alan's voice has worn well -- just not very powerful (but whose is at that age?) -- but still just fine. The horns were great. I was really surprised they didn't sing Hamish's "A Love of Your Own" though they did sing "Cloudy" and "Queen of My Soul" -- both Hamish penned tunes. They also opened the show singing a surprise song that I've always loved from the white album "I Just Can't Give You Up" -- another Hamish song! Anyway, I wanted Hamish to know that the guy they recruited to sing his songs did a surprisingly great job. It was sold out (or nearly sold out crowd) at a fairly large venue -- which was good to see. I'd love to see 360 though I doubt they are coming to Las Vegas. Cheers, John

Just to add (after nothing for so long)I feel that I'm missing out on Hamish's gigs as I don't know where to look for future dates. Sometimes when Tom Carr tells me about
dates in Scotland or perhaps Steve Quirk nearer to here it's too late for us to make arrangements. When looking at Sulphuric site under 'gigs' it looks as if nothing is happening and then fellow fans write saying how good a show was. Too late was the cry! Can any of you give advice about this dilemma. Hazel Farrell Manchester

Hello Hamish!

I just learned that "A Love Of Your Own" was written by you and was surprised that it came together so quickly - you related it took about 10 minutes! It is one of my favorite songs of all time, one that touches me viscerally and emotionally every time I hear it. And when I say "one of my favorite songs", I don't mean one of my favorite AWB songs - I mean one of my favorite songs, by anybody, period. It has a soaring, soul-rending quality to it in terms of how it makes me feel. Not to mention the exceptional musicianship of each player coming together to create that sound and those feelings. Thanks for giving it to the world.
It is part of the soundtrack of my life.

I unfortunately was not blessed with musical talent and never learned how to play any instrument, but I do have a real appreciation for music, and for those who have the gift and share it with others. I would imagine that being able to hear something in your head and also being able to then render it repeatable and shareable through guitar, piano, voice, etc., must be a liberating creative process, and one I wish I had also. (I often have melodies or riffs in my head, that I wake up with, or that just hit me at random times, but I have no way to scratch them out of my brain and onto a keyboard, and can't even hum them most of the time.) But I devoutly wish that I could. I'm just glad that there are people like you, though, who can create, conceptualize and transmit such soaring, deep, tender, and very real, feelings through the beauty of music, and who are willing to share it with others. Thank you for it. And it is grand that you are able to earn a living through it.
"Find something you love to do that you can be paid for, and you'll never work a day in your life" is something I've heard said, and that is not to say that the life of a musician, esp. one on a grueling tour schedule, or in the process of trying to put a marketable album together, while dealing with all the pressures of record company execs and their middle-management underlings, is in any way a day at the beach. But it must be truly wonderful, liberating and joyful to sit down with other musical friends and just jam together. Maybe in heaven I'll be able to do that, too - it has always been something I have longed for, to participate in making music with others. I can only imagine it as a beautiful feeling, what it must be like to start playing something of your own, and another musician you are with suddenly just "gets it" and you are off, grooving together, on the same wavelength literally and figuratively!

Well, anyway, I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate "A Love Of Your Own" and also "Queen Of My Soul" which I think expresses beautifully your own feelings of the joy music has brought to your own life, and the happiness you feel in sharing it with others.

With my best wishes, admiration and deep respect,

Margaret Fex

Hi Hamish,
Re my posting a while back suggesting you consider penning your own autobiography.....

I am currently reading Paul McCartney's biography and smiled when reference to your dress was made highlighting your apparent ignorance of the McCartney's strict stance on animal rights!

For your first meeting, you arrived wearing a fur coat, leather trousers and snakeskin boots!!

There is also a nice photograph of you on stage with Paul and Linda!

Hamish, I, like many other people have seen you on stage in many locations. I thought that I had seen you at your best, but I was wrong. Last Friday I had the privilege of seeing you in the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow with the Ryan Quigley Big Band. Frankly, it was fantastic. You looked so relaxed and pleased to be there and the overall sound was excellent. The band was huge, there were 5 saxes, trombones, trumpets plus all the normal drums, keyboards etc. There were many high points but to hear PUTP with 5 saxes was the best of all. Wonderful night and I really appreciated it. Come back soon. All the best.

Hi Hamish .. Always wanted to know if you ever received a large 30x40 color stage photo print I made for you back in 1990 ? These prints were made for everyone in the band requested by Paul and Linda. I personally delivered them to Geoff Baker in London. Paul referred to me as the "Pirate Photographer" after sneaking my camera into Madison Square Garden opening night in 1989. I understood there was a big security meeting when Paul saw the print at a press conference in Miami in 1990 and asked to meet me. He then had is staff photographer duplicate the image for his center spread in the "Tripping the Live Fantastic" album. My shot was the best !! Please advise that you did or didn't receive it .... Thanks ! Jerry

I know that you played with Stuart in the 60's/70's and have uncovered some great stuff about thisera. However, i cannot find any trace of Stuart post-Glencoe days - any idea what happened to him and where he is now? Cheers, Davy.

I just ordered the new box set "all the pieces". Outstanding. I already had all of AWB's albums and cd's and mainly purchased this for the previously unreleased material and the clover sessions. What surprised me the most was the quality of the CD's. The transfers must have been handling expertly b/c they are all outstanding.

I have thousands of cd's and albums and I still rank AWB's white album as one of the top 5 albums ever made by any artist. Interestingly, in high school I listened to ALL of AWB's music, but my favorites are: White album, Soul Searching, Cut the Cake, Shine, and Vol XIII. Those cd's have never grown old for me.

What I wanted to ask Hamish or Malcolm is this: There's a pretty big difference in the sound/feel of the songs from the Clover Sessions to what eventually became the White album. Is the difference in sound/quality mostly attributable to Arif Mardin's involvement? John

Sorry. Gotta be bold hereand make a request. I just discovered on Youtube..a certain singer named Emma. Im officially asking (begging).she be recorded on a songand put on either your ep..or albumor on her own. And here is that song. An unknown Neil Sedaka tune called "The Leaving Game". She would make grown men cry..with her performance of that tune. Its like it was written for her voice and style. As would be a soulful duet with you on "The Hungry Years". She and youwould take those twoclassic, poignant ..timeless lyrics and truth, and musicality.to another level. If not this album..the very next. Forgive my boldnessrequest. But I had to.

Some may know my lifelong friend Matt Irving from his time in Paul Young's touring band back in the 80's and also from his time with Squeeze and again with Paul's TexMex band Los Pacaminos.
Sadly we lost Matt to Prostate Cancer after 7 or so years of fighting it. He was my oldest friend and we met at school back when we were both around 13. We worked together a lot until AWB kicked off and lost touch for a few years but when we reconnected we worked together a lot, the last time being when Matt called me about a project for the charity Prostate Cancer UK. We duly recorded two songs for the album with tracks donated by Nick Kershaw, Andy Fairweather Lowe, Chris Difford, Joe Brown and of course Los Pacaminos.
The songs we recorded were to be some of the last things he did as he passed away around three weeks after the sessions, which had been a gathering of his non 'Pacaminos' friends.
There will be a concert in Matt's honour on his birthday March 16th 2016 and details are on the link I'll attach to this post.
All the best for this upcoming holiday season.

Hi Hamish,
Hope you are well and staying creative?
I just wanted to express my pleasure in reading the booklet that came with my recently purchased box set 'All the Pieces'.

The pleasure stems from the extremely complimentary comments that both you and Alan make about each other, in documenting the special moment in time that AWB shared at the height of their success.

Hope that you manage to gig in Liverpool- my home City. We have shared in the past on this forum our memories of a sell out AWB gig at the Liverpool Empire back in 1978. Magical!

Best wishes

Just a quickie to says thanks for a fabulous night at the 606 club on Sunday. I'd not been before but I gather it is one of your spiritual homes - it certainly felt like it was.

I've not seen you live since AWB days but it was a joy to hear both some oldies - Queen of my Soul my favourite AWB track (with Would you Stay on the 45 B side.....another classic rarely played)and some newies from the forthcoming album - can't wait.

We went with two friends who are not soaked in music but they were blown away by the quality of musicianship, the intimacy of the place and the joy of the music itself. So good!!

As I mentioned in the bar, look out for the Legend of Barney Thompson movie - macabre goings on in downtown Glasgow.

Wow!
Another great couple of days at Smoketree, as we inch closer to completing this album. The basic tracks are so good that everything else is just gravy.
Ross Stanley came in yesterday and added a couple of fresh keyboard parts to a couple of songs and I've been doing guitar overdubs and chasing those elusive vocal performances.
Will spend tomorrow, before the 606 gig, reviewing the last couple of tunes to make sure nothing escapes. It's all sounding superb and we're rounding the final turn into Mix mode. Always tricky but inevitably rewarding.
Looking forward so much to the finished product.
First 1000, vinyl only.

Hi Everybody,
Hope I've replied to all who've been in touch. There a quite a few changes taking place on the website which will be ongoing till it's all up to date. Thanks to all who made it to the Person To Person shows. It was a fun experience but reaffirmed the need to not just play the old songs and keep moving on. To that end we'll have a new album out in the next few months. We had a great time recording together again and we agreed that it was just like the old days when making records was a really fun process and was about 'the moment'.
We will also be doing more shows together whenever we can.
We will start selling albums from the site soon too which should help out those folks who are having trouble finding the music.
All the best.
Hame

A song of sincerity, simplicity, and hope. And a song of substance. Well played and well sung. It stays with you, if you know what I mean. It sticks to the bone. "The sooner you give the sooner you're gonna get" was, is, and will remain deep. Thank you, Hamish.

Person to person - Queens Hall last night - what a truly magnificent gig. Individually and collectively the band was spot on. The audience loved it. What a group of truly proper musicians - brilliantly led by Hamish. His rendition of 'Cloudy' was simply sublime.

Just can't give you up.

Thanks

Just wanted to say thanks to you and the band for a truly amazing gig at Ronnie's last night Hamish - can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. Amazing material to start with, but so brilliantly played - couldn't stop smiling the entire way through :-) Memories of my late teenage years came flooding back hearing those songs live again - and of playing footie with you and Steve Ferrone in the Great Hall at Lancaster University before that night's gig on the Feel No Fret tour! To hear Goin' Home played live was one of the few missing items on my musical wish list (up there with seeing Joni live, which sadly I doubt will be fulfilled...) so I was in seventh heaven when you played it last night. Totally cooked!!! Could happily sit and listen to the whole thing again night after night... So thanks once more - the memory of last night will stick around for a long, long time to come. cheers, Mark.

Hamish
Was at Ronnie Scotts seeing The Yellowjackets last Tuesday night. Got home and saw you were playing there in the programme of events that I had picked up. Seeing Soul Searching live was always one of my great ambitions and, of course, it was sold out. Wrote to the club about returns and got the call at 1500 on Friday afternoon - two tickets available.
Can't tell you how much Helen and I enjoyed it - it was just way way too short!! Here's to the next time??
All the best

Gutted to miss you at Ronnie Scott's last week - would loved to have seen the band but was already committed to Latitude. Seeing AWB in November as part compensation!

Any ideas on getting hold of Real Live - no joy on the link on your website. I've got Sooner or Later but that's all.

Any plans for future London/SE/Midlands gigs?

Wow ! Back home, after a slightly restless night in the back of my van, following a few beers, and your set at Blues on the Farm . Have seen you a few times now at Chi Inn, Moare and decades ago, with AWB at Brighton Technical College, but last night was the tops. Just Sublime. Despite a sparse crowd, I thought you and the band nailed it, great foh mix too. And the brass was icing on the cake -un'cut' of course ! Over coffee and a bacon roll this morning, a wizened old blues hack told me it was the best Thursday they'd had in years. Should think so too. Anyway, we both look forward to seeing you at Ronnies Scotts, with Steve and Molly, shortly. All the best, Simon

Hamish I came to a gig of yours with my partner in Bowden near Manchester some years ago and you sang "Some other time." The day of the gig we had just found out my partner had terminal cancer. I listened to the words of the song and cried all the way through the song. Sadly she passed away a few weeks later . I have trawled the internet you tube, I tunes you name it I've looked. However I cannot find your version anywhere. If you happen to see this post or if any of your readers know where I can get a copy please let me know.

Hi Hamish

Saw Snake Davis at The Platform in Morecambe on 22/05/15 - this time it was The 'Sax Solo's Tour'. For me, better than with The Suspicions. Anyway,I mentioned to Snake, 'Person to Person' on 21/07/15 at The Queens Hall Edinburgh - when I asked him, he said it was OK for me to mention this to you by this medium re his availability. I will be there anyway, but it would be great to see Snake in The Horn Section.

'Warmer Communications '(1976) When AWB appeared at Lancaster University in 1978ish, Richard Allison (who subsequently became a BBC Radio 2 DJ and me interviewed Alan Gorrie in the Great Hall - you were kicking a ball about at the time Hamish. if I remember. I asked Alan if the album and and the 'Warmer Communications' track, was a a play on words re AWB's relationship with Warner Brothers. He sat on the fence - was non committal. With the passage of time, are you able to satisfy my curiosity?

'She's a Dream' The lyrics aren't bad for you Hamish (joke! joke!)

All Hamish fans please check this beautiful, beautiful song - written by Hamish, sung by him 'Warmer Communications' (1976), and the lyrics. Superb lyrics.

Was She a Dream? What do you think? Yes or No? Let me know Or was the illusion being being kept alive.

Saw Snake Davis and The Suspicions last Friday in Ulverston. Great gig. Snake is a master saxophonist. Snake did say he had spoken with Hamish in the last few days - have seen Snake him with The Hamish Stuart Band previously.
Can't wait for 21st July and 'Soul Searching' Saw AWB at The Odeon on 16/05/1976. 'Cloudy'
Been reprising some (essentially Hamish) AWB stuff recently. Please please check out 'She's a Dream'Warmer Communications (1976) - oh my giddy aunt. This is Hamish - written and sung by him - it is so fresh. Beautiful.

"Person To Person" is Malcolm (Molly) Duncan, Steve Ferrone and yours truly Hamish Stuart.
This idea was born in January 2014, when we played together at Steve's induction into the Drummer's Hall Of Fame in LA. We decided there and then to do it again and this July became the best window in all our schedules. So-on July 16/17th we play three shows at Ronnie Scott's and on the 21st Edinburgh, Queen's Hall.
We'll be performing our 1976 album Soul Searching in it's entirety. This has never been done before but lends itself to being approached this way, as it has a beginning, an end and lots of meat in the middle.
The album clocks in at just over 40 minutes which leaves lots of time to play the songs we love from Cut The Cake, Feel No Fret and the "White Album".
A pretty formidable set of tunes which have stood the test of time, some of which I've continued to play over the non AWB years.
Revisiting this material has been a joy to do and I'm looking forward to playing all the music after so long with two of the individuals who were instrumental in creating it.
Cheers for now.
Hamish

Hi Friends,

YES! Robbie Mac would have become a pensioner yesterday. He will be missed till there are no more days.
My oldest friend Matt Irving who travelled to London with me, from Glasgow 46 years ago to make our first record for Decca turned 65 on March 16th. He got his first pension and took his mates to lunch and was happy to find that it was enough to cover the lunch check. Sadly Matt passed away on Good Friday after a long battle with Prostate Cancer. Two of my handful of best friends died 40 years apart, both went too soon.
Ben E. King, or 'Benny' , as he became, was a lovely man and a musical hero, whose rendition of Stand BY Me will live as long as music is played. We had a ball making the album 'Benny and Us' and had many good times together. When the movie Stand By Me was a hit Benny called me in Los Angeles, where I was living at the time and was so excited that the song that had given him his career was giving him yet another gift. He was in LA doing tv and radio and press and was back on top and very happy. I missed him last time he was in London and had hoped to see him next time but that was not to be.
RIP Ben E.
Also farewell to an old neighbour Errol Brown.
That's it! Farewell old friends.
We carry on and on and on.

Last year we had a reunion of sorts when I played a show with my band and the reunited Kokomo in Darvel. As we got on the plane I said to singer Frank-do you realise the last time we boarded a plane together was 38 years ago?
We did a tour of the US and the UK within a year and had a lot of fun, as we did last year in Darvel. We were always musical kindred spirits and continue to be. That is why I'm looking forward to playing Blues on The Farm with them on the 18th of June. It will be special again I know. A day of great groove from beginning to end.
Hope to see you there as we celebrate our musical legacy together.
Best to all,
Hamish

Ben E. Kinghas also passed. Great man and talent. As an AWB fan ..he was like our "fifth Beatle" . He and Hamishblended together so well on a number of classics. On one of the greatest albums ever "Benny and us".and the forever lost gem"Everything must change"from the Montreux album.

I'm very sad to learn the subject news. He covered "Pick Up the Pieces". (His one of albums "Do it Again" includes unbelievable noise). May his soul rest in peace.
