Hmmm...I feel slightly better now. All this time I thought I was the only one out here who actually liked him. While I do think that the term "hero" might be a bit much, he's certainly the most fascinating villain to ever grace a television screen. And I do believe that CSM really believes his actions are right or at least justified. He's a brilliant and thoroughly ruthless man, but with the aliens at the threshold, so to speak, isn't that what's needed? And, as is pointed out, there is certainly historical precedent for the "some must be sacrificed so that others can be saved" philosophy.
As sympathetic as I may find Mulder and his quest for truth, I'm not entirely sure I agree with it. If he wants to learn what really happened to his sister and why that's one thing - more power to him. It's his determination to broadcast his discoveries to the public at large I question. It's one thing to know an unpleasant truth if there's something that can actually be done about it, but who's really going to benefit from knowing that we're fast approaching an alien invasion that will annhialate most of us and there doesn't seem to be a damn thing anyone can do to stop it?

Besides, anyone who'd shoot Spender and probably had Fowley killed can't be all bad. I worship the ground he slithers on!
