CC was right on the money when he insisted on casting GA as Scully. DD also was the perfect Mulder. As we all know the resulting UST was frosting on the cake and actually it was just as important as the intended storyline.

I think maybe CC was using his intuition when the actual casting decisions were made. Perhaps he saw something in the two actors that he knew would work--he just didn't know how WELL it would work!

As for reversing roles, perhaps with careful writing it would have worked. Both Scully and Mulder demonstrated characteristics that one could call feminine and masculine.
