IMHO, neither a male/male nor a female/female partnership would have been anywhere near as interesting as what we actually got!! Even for noromos, who didn't want Mulder and Scully to be attracted to each other, there was no denying that each partner was an *extremely* attractive representative of his or her sex. So both men and women at least had some eye candy to ogle if thinks got boring. (Which they rarely did. But, let's face it, there were a *few* bad eps throughout the series, which were only redeemed -- for me at least -- by the chance to stare at DD.)
Speaking of TV partnerships with more traditional male/female roles, there was a shortlived 80s TV show called "Probe", which I'm always nattering on about, that had that sort of set-up: the man was a scientist and the woman was his secretary. He was very "book smart" but lacked social skills whereas she was kind of ditzy but got along wonderfully with people. Also, while I'm hardly up on the dynamics of the DRR, wasn't that *their* set up?? Reyes as the emotional, intuitive one and Doggy as the logical by-the-book one??
