Subject: But Fox was dead set against GA because she wasn't pretty enough
In reply to: kande 's message, "Help needed." on 08:04:38 10/16/00 Mon

The story goes, as you probably know, that CC had to fight tooth and nail to have GA play Scully and Fox fought against it because she wasn't beautiful enough and they would have preferred someone like Pamela Anderson rather than Gillian Anderson. In the beginning she didn't really have the reputation as being qa classic Hollywood beauty. She's short and was a little pudgy and the typical female star that most casting agents want are thin, long leggy types.

I think the stereotype for smart women is that they are often the unattractive one. Think Scooby Do and the Thelma character which Scully has been compared to hasn't she?

Now of course Scully IS beautiful but I think her beauty developed out of the strength of her character and asll of her fine qualites. It wasn't surface beauty.

You know DD/Mulder has gotten the same treatment by some. He's not considered to have the classic movie star looks. He's lanky, has a big nose amd small eyes. But those of us who fell in love with the character of Mulder think he's gorgeous now. But previously I didn't really think much of DD one way or another. It was Mulder that first grabbed me.

And in both Mulder and Scully's cases, they are anything but stereotypical.

Glad to see a new post here kande! It's been dead on this board. I hope there are more Scully threads once Season 8 starts. After all, she's the lead character now!
