Subject: Scully's on camera behavior
In reply to: kande 's message, "S7 Spoilers: >slam< "I hate you guys!"" on 04:44:55 02/21/00 Mon

I thought Scully was great and fit her character perfectly! You know for her, it's one thing to criticise Mulder to his face and she will let him know how she feels. But she never does this in front of others. She always covers for him and protects him. She won't let her integrity be compromised but she will do her best to keep him from looking foolish whenever posible.

That's one reason I think she hated the cameras there so much. She was so worried about Mulder exposing himself to the world and looking ridiculous. He didn't care but she cared for him. And part of it was she didn't want herself to look bad either which is only natural. But I thought the characterization of both ws so great. David has said that one thing about Mulder is he doesn't care at all what people think of him and this displayd that. Scully is more self conscious of how she will come off to others. It's always interesting to see how they work this out in eps and this was a good display of the two sides.

On the stereotyping, I always have a problem with that on XF. They seem to do that with everybody. I think they are particularly bad with Latinos. One bad example being the couple in Agua Mala. They also portray teens badly too. So when the Latinos woman showd up in X-Cops I just thought there's yet another one. XF always makes them a bit hysterical. But this sn't as bad as other times. When we first see Steve and Edie I thought 'once again more typical XF stereotyping' but when it got to the part where Edie was playing for the cameras ("I'm ready for my clsoe up"!) and singing it seemed to difuse things a lot. Here we had a character having fun himself. Plus the fact tht there really are some off beat people on Cops so this really represented what is on that show. And also there are people in real life like Steve and Edie. What I think made it work was how endearing ey were and that it wasn't so much they were beng made fun of (well they were a little) but just that they were funny!

And they were also presented as very sympatheti characters and ended up being a key element to the case and helping Mulder and Scully figure out what was going one. It was because they were more concerned about their own relationship than they were about fear toward the creature that clued M&S in to what was going on so they playe a significant role in the stor. They weren't just there for show. I think they were presented pretty fairly, rather over the top but it was in keeping with the style of the program and wasn't mean spirited in any way.
