There was a principal who once said that "Nobody is irreplaceable" and I think the tv shows you mentioned are good examples. I do think that even in the XFiles, the absence of Mulder made a drastic change in the show. As for some of the women--I think a few have stayed home for a while to raise children. Jennifer Garner did that and is back. Gillian Anderson is back doing PBS (BBC) movies.

I can't help wonder if these "disappearing actors" decided they had made enough money (invested it wisely) and can afford to do whatever they want. Perhaps "bit parts" are all they want to do. Then I suppose there are others who just got tired of the rat race and are happy doing something else.
