Subject: Stop Smoking ads on TV

It seems that, lately, every other advertisement I see on TV is for some sort of "stop smoking" program; gums, public service announcements, etc.

My question is. . .are there really that many smokers out there nowadays?? Back in the 1970s, it seemed like well over half of all adults smoked. My parents were considered relatively unusual in that my Mom didn't smoke at all and my Dad smoked only pipes and cigars, not cigarettes. But almost all my aunts, uncles, friends' parents, neighbors, etc. smoked cigarettes.

Yet I hardly know *anybody* who smokes nowadays! My son-in-law smokes, as do a couple of my co-workers, but that's about it! My husband and I don't smoke, nor do any of our three children (all at least 18), any of his siblings or my siblings, any of our close friends or the majority of my co-workers.

So. . .I'm a little confused as to who all these "stop smoking" ads are aimed at! It just doesn't seem like it's a large enough percentage of American adults to justify expensive ad campaigns on network television.

BTW, does anybody here smoke? Or have a spouse/significant other who smokes? (You can 'fess up without worrying that I'm going to fuss at you. While I don't smoke and don't allow people to smoke in my home, I don't really care if other adults smoke in their own homes or vehicles.)
