Yikes! Really giving it to JW. Well, I'm not going to give up on him. I feel Angel S5 has been disappointing but not awful. I think its gathering steam now. Joss takes us on a ride, not every twist or turn works out but at least he tries.

This new season was supposedly going to be all stand alone stories since the WB felt last year was too complicated to follow for casual viewers. But Joss can't help himself & here in the later part of the season comes the arc. Some of the stand alones were not good, I don't even want to discuss the puppet ep at all!

Spike has kinda pushed everyone else aside & made it the Angel & Spike show which is a shame. He hung around for a long time with no reason to do anything but lately I like the commeradarie with Angel like they are reliving the old hell raising days. SMG is a wrap for now & thats OK. I don't think she really loves Spike. That relationship kept Buffy's last 2 seasons interesting (at the expense of the other supporting players).

Buffy's last 2 seasons seemed to lack male characters & now Angel lacks women. Cordy really held the show together as I now see on the Angel reruns on TNT. Losing her made a void, I did like her send off but what a waste. What's the real story there anyway? Fired? Forced out? Wants to be a mom? Wants to be Wonder Woman? Killing off Fred so soon after was a bit too much. I guess Amy Acker can now strech the acting more but that was lame building up evil-goddess-whats-her-name & then "oh gee...I can't take over the world..oh well.." I assume she is crucial for the climax.

Fred, Wes & Gunn are so underused thus far. Once again, one of the group screws up & is on the outs (Gunn). Wes & Fred finally get together which I thought they had done last year. Did everyone get amnesia about everything? I see Connor is back soon, hopefully not for long. I got so sick of his whining. He's the Dawn of Angel!

I hear the second to last ep answers the Angel vs. Spike for buffy's affection once & for all even though SMG won't appear. Huh? I guess you have inside info. I would think Andrew or Giles would have told Buffy Spike is alive by now. I think Angel should go out on it's own & not with Buffy there. Having her there with Angel should be reserved for the absolute end of the Whedon-verse as a now human Angel walks off into the sunset with Buffy. But this isn't the end, Joss might not have an end in sight.

As a writer, I know where Joss gets his story telling skills. From comics (he'll be writing X-Men for 12 issues starting in a few months). In comics, characters change & question themselves constantly & get surprises galore. Thats how he does the shows, like comics. Now I think having Buffy and/or Angel question themselves & needing a boost has been done just a few times too many by now. Also hitting us with the unexpected is becoming very expected. Just like the death of a major character, in comics this was unheard of but then wham! But in 1980, the X-Men killed off Jean Gray AKA the Phoenix in a spectacular storyline (of course she was resurrected later).

I still give joss credit & say he runs circles around the competition on his worst days. Angel S5 is weak but so was Buffy S4 or S6. He's not in complete charge anyway what with so much going on with him. I have doubts the Serenity movie will be a blockbuster, maybe a minor hit which will be OK on a minor budget (nice to see Jayne employed again on Angel just like Mal & Zoe).

CC totally ran out of gas. XF S8 & 9 were crap, S6 & 7 were already in decline IMHO. Lone Gunmen was OK but nothing special really, don't know how well that could have been sustained & he let Millenium be ruined & Harsh Realm didn't even have a chance. I'm not going to go wild over XF2. Joss criticized XF by saying Scully doesn't change over the course of the show, she still doubts after Mulder is proved right again & again. Joss puts his characters through changes (maybe not so severe). CC came up with a great concept but then stagnated it. I give JW the edge but CC certainly has more juice as his show was a gigantic success while Joss' stuff is strictly cult following.
