XF has been totally off the air since May of 2002. DD ended full-time involvement with the show in May of 2000 and that's when a great many fans (including me) stopped watching it on a regular basis. It's just one of those iconic shows, though. All during the 70s and 80s, if something was weird, people referred to it as being "like something out of the Twilight Zone"; about 10 years ago, people started referring to such oddities as being "like something out of The X-Files" and I'm sure that reference will stick around until another creepy show comes along 20 years from now.
The crop circles in this show were caused by irate "mountain folk" (this particular ep was set in West Virginia; like XF, the NCIS folks tend to visit a lot of different locations) involved in some sort of longstanding feud. The helicopter pilot who landed there was related to one of the feuding families and the folks on the other side of the feud didn't want NCIS looking for him, because they wanted to hunt him down and kill him, so they tried to make the NCIS agents think he'd been abducted by aliens.
