Now I'm vaguely remembering the Gargoyles ep. Kmom, I actually had no idea of the answer myself. I couldn't remember! I just remembered that actor being in an XF. But from IG's description I think it was the Patterson guy who went mad. It was an ep about crawling into the mind of a serial killer (something real FBI profilers have written and talked about doing) and in some cases like with Patterson they go too far and lose themselves.

I think this is the guy but I really didn't know the answer myself.
So, points for Kmom and IG!
