another sort of person you hardly ever see as a regular cast member on most TV shows are women over the age of 50! Men over 50 are fairly common — Ducky (and maybe Gibbs, too) on "NCIS" and Sid (and maybe Mac) on "CSI:NY" and the Dad on "Numb3rs" — but in a lot of ensemble TV shows they will have two women. There is usually a "hot, young female character" which means a woman in the 25-34-year-old age range and then a more "mature" woman which means one in the 35- to 49-year-age range.

But you'd think, from watching most TV shows, that women drop dead (or, at the very least, retire from the workforce) once they reach 50. It wasn't always this way. Back in the 1980s you had a fair number of shows — like "Murder, She Wrote" and "The Golden Girls" — where women in their 50s were the main characters. But no more!

As I am both married and a woman who is fast-approaching 50, there aren't exactly a lot of characters on TV I can identify with!
