When you start to buy future seasons you will see that Jack is knowledgable in just about everything and in a time loop he learns Ancient. Take for instances the episode with the team meeting Cassie for the first time. Just before the team walks up the ramp and Jack is tying his boot the team is talking about a black hole, and Jack throws out something scientific at them that surprises Daniel, this is where we get the first glimps of Jacks 'smartness' if you will; the second is the episode of the black hole where you understand a little of what Jack through in Iraq and how angry he was of being left behind. If Jack served in Iraq he would have to pick up the language.
Anyway, just wanted to through those out there! I hope this helps to understand Jack a little better.
