Subject: News about "Alias"--moving to Wednesdays after "Lost"?

"Alias" Fourth Season Preview

As far as dilemmas go, ABC has one of the more pleasant ones to deal with at the moment. Up until a few weeks ago, the Jennifer Garner-led spy thriller "Alias" was the network's only real strong performing drama series of recent years and this season was to see the show being held off til January so a new episode would air each week and there'd be no interruptions or repeats. In its timeslot in the Fall to fill the gap was a little dark comedy series which they hoped would do well - a quaint little show called "Desperate Housewives".

Now, things have changed. "Desperate Housewives" has become a bonafide television phenomenon and the network has given the series a full season order. Much as "Alias" was a strong performer for the network, it has never approached 'Housewives' level in the ratings. Thus the verdict seems certain that the J.J. Abrams show will be moving its timeslot to somewhere else for its fourth season in January, the big question now is where?
Nothing has been locked in yet though best bets have it likely to take the 9pm Wednesdays slot right after the network's other big success story - Abrams' "Lost". Currently post-"Lost" is the long-running reality show "The Bachelor" which has been performing dismally this season. The only ratings threat on at that hour is NBC's "The West Wing" which since Aaron Sorkin's departure in 2003 has seen big drops in acclaim and viewership - so much so it's touted this will likely be that show's last year.

In any case the extra time given the show to develop its new season has apparently paid off. Refreshing upfront about last season's problems, Abrams told TV Guide Insider that "I think one of the biggest mistakes I made last year was to let story and plot dictate episodes rather than have our characters run the show. There was no more Sydney as a real, normal person. [This season] we'll get a sense of her as a person, not just a suit. Part of it will be through her relationship with Vaughn, part of it will be seeing her at home, part of it will be through her relationship with her sister, played by Mia Maestro. She will be a regular this season".

The fourth season will return the characters to the old SD-6 style dynamic of the show's first season and a half - what many considered the show's best mold: "Sloane will no longer be a peripheral character. Vaughn will no longer be the kind of meandering betrayer of Sydney. Marshall won't just be another mouthpiece in conference-room scenes. Dixon will no longer be the authority figure. And Jack will no longer just be the milquetoast dad."

Other SPOILER INFORMATION revealed recently includes:

- The two-part season premiere will solve the mystery of the final moments of Season Three where Sydney discovered black light documents in a Swiss bank vault revealing that Jack did something horrible to her around the time she was born.

- Angela Bassett guest stars in the premiere as a new CIA head honcho.

- Melissa George is NOT scheduled to come back as Vaughn's wife Lauren this season. Her death in the third season finale looks pretty final for now.

- Sark will be back but only as a recurring character this season. Actor David Anders is dividing his time this year between playing Sark on "Alias" and as a new recurring character on CBS's mega-hit "C.S.I.".

- Negotiations are underway to try and get Bradley Cooper to reprise his role of Will Tippin for at least one episode this year.

- The fifth episode will see a major character death.

- The seventh and eight episodes are a two-parter heavily featuring Sark and guest star Gina Torres who appeared in the first season as Sydney's spy rival Anna Espinoza.
