Subject: Goodbye Reggie...

It's coaching. Plain and simple. He's recruited decent talent, can't deny that. This team has been competitive, but I fail to see any player development and it always seems the best 5 aren't always on the floor. The attendance to games is awful. Reggie has alienated himself from alumni and fans. Doesn't seem like the players actually care for him much either.

2-7 in the MAAC tournament and 5 straight losses. That's absolutely atrocious. 20 years as a division 1 coach and ZERO tournament appearances. Only twice has his teams finished at the top of the league, and even then they lose early on in whatever tournament they're invited to.

It's time to let go. He's a below .500 coach for his career and he brings absolutely nothing to the table. The program needs a fresh start and some energy to rejuvenate it.

Regrettably, Canisius is not in the position to afford firing Reggie now, and must await the end of his contract in 2024 to move on. If we had a rich alum or two who would subsidize a contract buy out, we could do so, but that appears to be not happening. Ironically, we were only able to afford to hire Jim Baron because a buddy of his from his Bona days paid a big chunk of his salary at CANISIUS.

So, we are left with a lame duck coach for next season who has little incentive to recruit talent even if kids would even consider coming here. Our only hope is that Reggie would embrace his final year as a retiring coach who helps us build for the future.

Here’s a thought outside the box. What if we hired Patrick Beilein as an assistant for next year with the commitment to become head coach when Reggie goes? Would cost us little (as Patrick is now earning a high school coach’s salary) and would allow Patrick to begin recruiting his team right away. And it would allow Reggie to go out gracefully and with the support of alums.

Baron made 208k in his final year at Canisius. Why would someone from Bona pay a part of it?

Baron’s best friend from his freshman team at Bona paid at least $100 G above the reported salary of $208G.

I've never heard that one. Conceptually, it doesn't make much sense. If your best friend from college had the means to give you $100,000, why wouldn't they just give it to you? Why would they make you work for it at a rival school?

Baron’s friend attended many games. I met him during the MAAC tournament in Springfield. Jim wanted to return to coaching after he was fired by Rhodesia Island and this guy gave him the money to make the CANISIUS job acceptable.

Is there anyone still at Canisius who this guy feels sorry for and could give them 100k to help buy out RW?

This is how college athletics works:

You do not pay a lump sum to a fired coach. He remains on payroll, getting his monthly check through the life of the contract. If he/she gets another job, his/her check is reduced by the amount of his/her new salary.

Or, you negotiate a settlement. As I've suggested, if we owe RW about $260,000, it's much easier to pay him off over a 5-year period at $52K a year, or $65K over four, etc., if he agrees to it. We can easily afford that.

Why would he agree to that? It's far more advantageous tax-wise. He just turned 62 years of age. A payout over four or five years would get him comfortably to the threshold of full SSI benefits, which for him is 67 years old. Heck, throw in medical coverage (a BIG deal) if that helps him accept the deal.

Bottom line, we need to move on. So think outside the box to make it happen.

It’s true. Fully confirmed.

What is fully confirmed?

Not a chance some Bona guy helped pay Baron's salary at Canisius. That sounds like some serious fake news!

It's not fake. The guy was also in the Coaches Circle. Can we use the money from the St. Peters run of last year to buyout the contract? It's a sizeable amount of money. We need to fix vs. maintaining the same culture of losing. Go Griffs!

So if he was in the Coaches Circle, he was a big time Canisius booster. Why he "flipped schools" might have a back story but that's a completely different thing than what was portrayed. Boosters paying large portions of coach's salaries is nothing new. Framing it as though the guy was simply Baron's best friend from college who was giving Canisius $100,000 a year towards his salary was a tad bit misleading.

He felt bad that Jim Baron got fired and thought he could help Canisius. Plus he got his son to play here so that helped the Griffs also.
