Subject: Griffs Broadcasts, Coverage, Lack of Coverage

I too miss the gogriffs.com broadcasts. Of course it is great all the games are on ESPN+. But while the rest of WNY's D1 basketball programs are STILL on actual radio stations, with pre & post game shows, we are nowhere to be found other than on a paid app that has no pre or post-game show to speak of. There is barely any attention paid to Canisius in the Buffalo News or on local radio or TV newscasts' sports segments. You shouldn't have to be a donor or season ticket holder to get some info on the program.

No need to rip a fan(s) who wants more access to the status of the team & program. Maybe a little more fan access would help our embarrassing low attendance numbers. I assume this will be the fewest # of fans to witness home games since the pre-Aud days. And if the marketing of the program keeps on this downhill path, the handful of regulars who still attend home games will be able to sit with Maher or Reitnour pregame (maybe at one of those round tables at the pregame buffet no one is aware still exists) and they can give the inside scoop on the program to the last remaining faithful.

GoGriffs.com and all of the social media platforms have highlights, player features, and more. Want more? Every single person on the marketing, sports information , or basketball staffs would love to give all the information they can.

Start with these sites, and you'll learn everything you can about Canisius Basketball:
GoGriffs.com

WGR and TV cost more than the school can afford. The Buffalo News has one college reporter and he's been at almost every home game since starting at the Buffalo News in November. Sign up for the Marketing Emails. The SID and Marketing Staff are VERY accessible, even to those who aren't donors and season ticket holders.

Man, I didn't realize they didn't do that anymore. That is sad. Not everyone has espn+, so I guess if they can't get to the game they're out of luck.

Practically every other school I follow has live radio coverage, and not having a radio contract smacks of even more Amateur Hour. Although, the Bonnies couldn't come to an agreement a couple of years ago with WPIG after countless years of live broadcasts. Now the games are broadcast by a Bradford, PA station, even though WPIG is by far the region's dominate station in terms of revenue and actually sits right adjacent to the western edge of Bona's campus.

Since the NCAA now allows sponsors to have patches on player's unis, maybe barter with a local station? The station gets a patch on the unis in exchange for live radio coverage. It's a little cheesy but it's the way of the college sports world today, whether we like it or not. Might as well cash in a little piece of the action.

Here's the list of visiting schools with radio or audio streaming the last two years:
-Binghamton
-Niagara
-Siena
-Marist
-Buffalo
-St. Bonaventure

I don't know who else you follow, but of the MAAC, three of thirteen have audio streaming. Locally, there's more, but Niagara and Buffalo pay a significant amount of money for that coverage. I've been told it's in the six figures.

As for jersey patches, they're already being discussed. Frankly, the value of those patches is worth more than radio coverage.

You might say, "well the radio pays for itself in promotion." The school is more profitable on streaming and social, and it's not even close.

There is no way on earth the station in little Bradford, PA pays six figures to broadcast the Bonnies games, and that's for a team with a very large fan/alumni following. I don't know where you heard what you heard, but you had better check your sources.

The radio station isn't the one paying. At this level, mostly the athletic departments pay and then try to recoup the costs with sponsors and advertising.

Some schools might also have an agreement with a Learfield, Wasserman/Octagon, Van Wagner, or similar sponsorship/media rights partner and then that partner takes a massive cut of the expenses as well as the revenue to use the school's brand, content, and events for sponsorships and advertising.

Canisius tried that in the past too, and it ended up being more profitable to manage the sponsorship sales and service in house.

Great post Franklin. Maybe we can’t afford to pay for over the air radio but if we can’t afford to stream something on our website we are really in bad financial shape. We had an active Cage Club(booster club) at one time open to all that gave any amount. Lots of opportunity’s for access to coach’s,AD SID etc. The school basically killed it for a coach’s Circle group for those that give $5,000 plus. How’s that working?😂 Reggie basically pissed off all the long time supporters too. When JC first came he sent some email updated that were great. Nothing lately. The Instagram posts telling me it’s game week or game day won’t do much but some posts are good. Right now no one goes to the games so don’t waste money on a video board until we get a decent team and get some fans watching ten. Spend that money to get players. At any rate I will continue to be a faithful fan until my end or the end of the program. Go Griffs!
