In reply to: Dennis S. Vogel 's message, "Walmart's CEO is retiring. Can You Afford To Retire?" on 16:55:38 01/13/09 Tue

I'm trying to preempt our host/master-of-ceremonies gloating. He’s been taking Walmart to task for forcing foreign sourcing of products; its suppliers polluting the environment in foreign countries to save money on production & the possibility of sweatshops in places Walmart inspectors wouldn’t dare inspect.
He cut them—the inspectors, not Walmart—some slack by stating the inspectors may not know where the factories or sweatshops are. They’d have to rely on the manufacturers to give them directions to find the factories. Manufacturers wouldn’t give inspectors directions to sweatshops.
H. Lee Scott, soon to be former Walmart CEO, said, “A key element of the new program is the requirement that suppliers of goods to Wal-Mart identify each factory where the products are made, allowing Wal-Mart to track and inspect those factories more easily.”

SCDigest editor Dan Gilmore noted. “That a company as powerful as Wal-Mart doesn’t really know where all of its globally sourced products are made is a testament to the challenges of maintaining control over a global supply chain.”

Here’s the preemption- Dennis, you’re not the only one who’s been on Walmart’s case.
But seriously, those are potentially powerful points.
What’s your response to these issues? What’s your next accusation?

Be careful, Walmart may be watching you!

"A company that cheats on overtime and on the age of its labor, that dumps its scraps and chemicals in our rivers, that does not pay its taxes or honor its contracts, will ultimately cheat on the quality of its products," CEO Lee Scott said in a press statement.

Scott told the truth there, but is this statement the beginning of Walmart’s repentance?

Retailers of all sizes better do what they can to avoid being painted with the same brush.
