It's a brutal operation, painful and obviously invasive. The recovery time is months, accompanied by lots of torturous physiotherapy. There is, as always with major surgery, the chance that it either won't make things better, or even make things worse; some people end up unable to walk unaided, even if they're now free of pain. Someone I know ended up with one leg longer than the other to the point where she had to wear corrective shoes and whilst she can walk, her gait is most ungainly. The trouble with pain is that only the sufferer knows how bad it is; I'm sure we've struggled on bravely through illness and have not liked to moan or keep telling others how bad we feel. I'm just pleased that in the few interviews I've read, Steve seems to have made a full recovery.
