Subject: You can't always get the staff

Frankly, it sucks. The problem is that, no matter what the character of a club, the bouncers always have too much discretionary power to enforce their own prejudices and private agendas, and there are never any consequences for them. As a non-staff member who's been drinking alcohol (it's assumed that you're drunk regardless of the facts) your word will in most cases count for nothing even if they let you anywhere near management on the way out (ours just happen to be standing next to the door so they can't be bypassed). It's not unheard of to be assaulted for no good reason and then charged with assault yourself (in order to counter any charges you may bring). Witnesses can be produced at will to perjure themselves and you can find yourself blacklisted at any place where the men in question (or any of their friends) work the door. In some clubs the management don't want to know because they're scared of their own security staff. I think it's fair to say that that's the case in a few of Hull's mainstream clubs. By and large, we have a pretty good bunch in Spiders, but the nature of the job doesn't attract people with tolerant attitudes, nor does it promote tolerance as a virtue. The way you were treated is indefensible and saying "it would have been worse elsewhere" is no real answer, but really it was down to the bouncers involved, not the club (and not necessarily the other bouncers). I doubt anyone else would even have noticed what you were doing, much less cared.
