I was away from this message board for a while. We've
just moved to another part of town to change the school
district.

Our 5-year-old daughter is deaf and autistic. She received cochlear implant when she was 18 months old. We didn't
have her officially diagnosed until last December until
it became painfully obvious to us that she needed more
service from school.

She was in Total Communication classroom until four and
was transferred to PPCD program. In TC program, she
learned to use little bit of signs and had about 10 signs
that she independently did and 40 more she could imitate.

After being in PPCD for only 2 months, she lost all her
signs but two. We tried to put her back to TC program but
her school refused our request.

In December, I learned about ABA/Verbal Behavior approach
and started to use it with her at home. She instantly
responded and started to use more signs. In March, I
started to homeschool her part of the day using VB.
During this summer, we hired 2 University students
and trained them as therapists. We did 20 hours of
therapy everyweek, plus speech therapy 3 times/week and
occupational therapy 2 times/week. By the end of summer
she had about 70 signs that she uses independently, and
could imitate any signs when demonstrated.

We found a school district that offers VB in classroom
so we packed up and moved just before the school started.
She is doing really great. She learns new signs easily
now. She is still non-verbal but started to imitate
some sounds upon request.
