Subject: The 1000lb Mako in retrospect

I'm going to start referring to this Mako as the 1000lb Mako. Why? well it is almost 1000lbs only 14lbs shy of it at weigh in, the shark probably lost that much weight in the fight, it was 5 hours long. 1000lbs sounds big and lets face it this shark was Big, the largest ever caught on the west coast, and almost the largest caught ever on 80lb. I saw a post at Stan's board last night. It essentially said OOOOHHHH NOOOO another big Mako was caught. This was not just another big Mako. Now I'm going to piss some people off here but I don't care, I think Toms got a raw deal on this and it's about time that someone spoke up about it.

What would you do if you caught a world record? Would you keep it or release it. Be careful what you say because I'm going to hold you to it in the future. Stan What would you do if the next trip out you picked up a world record striped Marlin? or better yet, what if the next trip out on the 172 you picked up a huge blue Marlin obviously the state record, and possibly the world record? That Mako Tom caught is just a rare of catch in local waters as a big blue. To all the taggers I ask the same question. What would you do? Next trip out you catch the world record, be honest what would you do? Tom had no way of knowing that it wasn't the world record, and it very well might of been. He hooked it fought it himself for five hours according to IGFA rules. It was a ten to one. In case you don't know what that means that's a fish that's ten times the weight of your line test. In this case it was better than ten to one, like catching a 100lb Mako on 8 lb test. Absolutely remarkable. The guy is obviously a very very good fisherman, and what has he gotten for it, abuse from his peers. All my life I've wanted to catch a fish like that, but right now I'm glad it wasn't me. I feel sorry for the guy, not for what he did, but for how he's being treated. Theirs a double standard going on here and it has a lot more to it than just conservation issues. Take a look at Skips post at Allcoast " BIIIIG!! MAKO'S take MdR...." , in it he talks about the two 300lb+ Mako's taken in a single day in the MDR shark tournament. Not one single negative post about "breeders" or destruction of the shark population. Or how about Kieths post over at shark Tagger "Re: Huge Mako Just Seen on KCBS Local News-Channel 2 in LA! " where he talks about the 1,324 lb Mako thats the new all tackle record, not a negative word. Once again this all reeks of a double standerd based on other issues than conservation. So I ask you. What would you do if you pulled a world record to your boat. You don't have to tell me, just try and be honest with yourself.

Tight lines Jim
