Subject: "Happy New Year" ...

*at least according to the Cherokee calendar! :)

"Great New Moon Ceremony" ...
*that would be today, October 7th, 2010 ...

"It took place in October when the new moon appeared. Since autumn was the season when Cherokee stories say the world was created, it represented the new year celebration. Each family brought some produce from their field to share, such as corn, beans and pumpkins. Ceremonies included dancing, purification by immersing seven times in water, called "going to water." The purification ceremony included predictions of health for the coming year by the "priest" using the sacred crystal."

Ten days after the New Moon Ceremony "Atohuna" was held, the reconciliation or "Friends Made" ceremony ...
that would be on October 17, 2010 ...

The ceremony dealt with relationships between two people of the same or opposite sex. According to Tribes that Slumber, "these relationships were bonds of "eternal friendship in which each person vowed to regard the other as himself as long as they both lived." It was a ceremony that was a pledge of universal fraternal or paternal love. It also "entailed reconciliation between those who had quarreled during the previous year." It symbolized the uniting of the people with the Creator and purification of body and mind. The New Moon Ceremony was said to have been the "most profoundly religious" of all the ceremonies. As with other observances, it also involved the rekindling of the sacred fire."

Today begins the "Year of the Reed" ...
"Part of the meaning of the reed is becoming an open conduit for breath, music, healing... or information and learning."

Breath, pneuma, in the Judaic and Christian world a Greek word meaning spirit.

The Year of the Spirit - -I like it.

Wow! the "Friends Made" ceremony elevates relationship to the sacred. Would that we always treated it that way.

Love,

Laura

This sounds totally wonderful. I could easily spend a week just exploring the area.
I'm so glad you thought of me. I love that we had the opportunity to meet and share some special time this summer. I think of you often.
Next weekend I head south once again. This time to see the butterfly migration in Pacific Grove. I'm so excited. I just hope the butterflies are really there.
We drove up to Lake Quinault to celebrate a birthday dinner with my nephew (David the drum maker) and his wife. It was quite beautiful. Each pocket of land was filled with low clouds. I had the salmon (Sah mon). The Quinaults recently held their "first Salmon" ceremony honouring the return of the salmon to the lake from the ocean. The first salmon is caught, honoured, killed, filleted and then returned to the water where ( if the filleting has been properly done) they actually swim away. No wonder they see the salmon as very special.

Tomorrow Mary and I drive up to Bremerton (2hr drive) for a memorial service for another nephew's wife who recently died of cancer. Not a pleasant time, but will see many of the relatives.

Hoping your school and life in general is going well.

Love always,
LauraG
