Subject: UK Immigration Policy

Prime Minister Blair has recently stated that if government initiatives to stem the tide of illegal immigrants into the UK fail, then he will be forced to review the UK's requirement under treaty to take in asylum seekers - and may even withdraw the United Kingdom from the requisite treaties and agreements. Does this outrage anyone else? A country that has traditionally been the first refuge of the oppressed (French emigres, Jewish refugees from Europe) and those seeking a new life (Indian settlers, the influx from former colonies and commonwealth countries) is now considering turning its back on a proud history of holding the door open for those in need? "Sorry folks, we would love to help, but we just don't have the money. What? Two billion on the Millennium Dome? Yes, but that's different." Fah. We stand for something better than that - we exported ideals of freedom to the world, ideals of compassionate treatment, set the foundations for entire nations based on that creed, and now we start to consider shutting people out in the cold?

Forgive the rant folks - this hurt when I read it, and I'm still burning about this one. Anyone else got any thoughts?
