Prime Minister Blair has recently stated that if government initiatives to stem the tide of illegal immigrants into the UK fail, then he will be forced to review the UK's requirement under treaty to take in asylum seekers - and may even withdraw the United Kingdom from the requisite treaties and agreements. Does this outrage anyone else?

Hell yes. For one thing, an asylum seeker is not an illegal immigrant. A refugee is NOT an immigrant of *any* sort.

An immigrant is a person who leaves their country and goes to another country by choice. A refugee is someone who has fled their country escaping persecution. There's a hell of a difference between the two.

The Australian government is also sadly making no discrimination between illegal immigrants and refugees and has the media lumping them both in the same category, which is stupid. In Australia, over 90% of real illegal immigrants are actually from the United Kingdom -- these are British citizens whose Visas have expired and the Australian government can't be bothered to extradite them.

Yet nowadays if a refugee comes here seeking political asylum, we cry that they don't have the right paper work and throw them into a detention centre -- which is fundamentally a form of imprisonment/incarceration without trial (oh gee, doesn't that fly against basic human rights? Dduuhh..). Of course they don't have passports and visas etc. To obtain such things, you need to go through legal applications etc., which is what you do if you plan to immigrate (note I used the word "plan"). When your neighbourhood suddenly gets shelled, you're not really gonna visit your local embassy and apply for a Visa... you tend to want to get the hell out of there -- FAST (preferably before you get your head blown off). Besides, the entire Visa system was something established by Nazis to monitor the international traffic of Jews. And before then, passports were something devised by the British Empire so that British travellers could feel more important. For the vast majority of human history, we have been moving around our planet without "paperwork."

It's sad to see how human compassion has changed since September 11... in many ways, we're losing our humanity.
