Subject: 2003 State of the Union

I was having a read through the State of the Union speech and came across the following little nugget which has worrying implications:

"All told, more than 3,000 suspected terrorists have been arrested in many countries. And many others have met a different fate.

Let's put it this way, they are no longer a problem for the United States and our friends and allies."

What? What "different fate"? This section of the speech reads like something a gangster would say in a cheap movie! "Don't you worry about Jonny Rico no more, doll, he won't be bothering anyone any more." I didn't see the live speech - was the President flipping a coin at this point?

Sorry if this sounds to anyone like criticism for criticism's sake, but such a statement - with its shades of "we shot the buggers on the quiet" meaning - rather stuck out in the middle of a Presidential address to congress. Not quite in the same league as "The dogmas of the quiet past..." more like "Mickey, Sanino, rub him out or make him an offer he can't refuse."
