Well, people make jokes about news events...it's something that everyone knows about, and some people hope that it can be funny. It's often in bad taste, but it's understandable to a degree. There are Titanic jokes that I find funny, and they have been used to sell children's cartoons....

People selling shuttle debris on Ebay is sick, and I don't see it as at all associated with the joking. These people are dead serious and will do anything for a quick buck, even if it means stealing from NASA.

But as terrible a thing as it is that seven people died on the shuttle...really, is it *that* unique? People die, every day, every minute, every second--the only thing that makes these seven unique is the fact that they bit it on public broadcast--and that they went down with on of the most expensive aerospacecraft on the planet. Essentially as ORB said, this is just a very, very expensive car wreck, and the attention it's getting is, in my opinion, almost in very bad taste itself.

And I wouldn't go as far as to say that this is proof that the shuttle design is flawed, either. There are definitely better designs possible, but that's always the case, and funding defines just how good they can be. Stuff happens. The shuttle still has a pretty impressive safety record.
