The abbreviated date system is just an extension of the way we write out the date, e.g. September 11, 2001. With the month and day narrow it down larger to smaller. However, the year is not used very often so it is stuck on the end, being of lesser signifigance than the month and day.

Of course, the real reason we do it that way is because we were taught that way by our parents. It's a system that works for us, so there's no incentive to change it.
