I agree and disagree a bit here. While Ryan and Blalock are both very talented actresses, and certainaly their...er...looks don't hurt the show as much, it does appear that, as Fawndoo pointed out, the characters are sometimes written as eyecandy. But then again Star Trek has always used "hot" women to their advantage. Look back at the oringal series. Most of the females, excluding O'hura(is that how you spell her name?) were just their as eye candy.

Next Generation managed to mix the two,Dr. Crusher was a well rounded character, as was Troy. And Deep Space Nine did a good job as well with their female leades. And yet the fact is...Sex Sells, and when competing against Cable and HBO's shows...Pauses to roll eyes in disgust...with its graphic violence and some of the dippy characters that they create is it anywonder that Sci-fi shows have to use the T&A to keep intrest high.

Also for the matter I think most of the writers on Trek are male, so I'm sure some of them are just drawing a broad line when they write the female characters so that they can concentrate on the action of the plot.
