I, too, deplore the need by Paramount to create a hyper-sexed character. It seems that they want UPN (their network) to focus on appealing to young males, and that is certainly a way to do it, but on the other hand they're already attracting young males, particularly the testosterone-junkies who do more thinking...er...with their little head than with their big head, through other programs, and especially through their WWF show. *Stifles urge to vomit* Why they need to do that with their Trek shows (just Voyager and Enterprise, as Deep Space Nine and The Next Generation were syndicated and not part of UPN) which already have a built-in audience is beyond me.

On the other hand, I think in the case of Seven of Nine and T'Pol the writers have done a very good job of not simply relying on the character's sex appeal. It's also helped that Jeri Ryan and Jolene Blalock, besides being very attractive women, are also quite intelligent and very good actresses. The appeal of these characters goes far beyond the hot body in the cat suit...(*waits for the males reading this to snap out of their fantasizing and continue reading*)...as they are wonderfully complex characters, each with her own inner turmoil. It was great to watch Seven act out her inner struggles, rejecting her Borg past but taking a long time to embrace her humanness. It's also been great to watch T'Pol for the interesting character she is: dealing with her own culture shock not being able to admit that she actually admires the humans she's chosen to work with, especially a certain commanding officer.
