Subject: Steeling ourselves for an argument

Well, there would seem to be something of a transatlantic trade dispute forming over the recent decision of the US Government to raise barriers to stop foreign sales of steel within the United States. President Bush has taken this move in response to calls from the US steel industry who were finding it difficult to compete with foreign cheap steel imports. However, there are concerns that while this will protect the US industry, it will affect the steel industry worldwide as imports to the US (a vasy market) suddenly turn to other places. There will be a glut of steel that no-one wants, thus forcing the price down and putting the industry into a slump.

What are your thoughts on this? We are all concerned for our home markets, but is the European Union right when it says this decision flouts the rules of world trade? Is the decision of the US government defensible, given President Bush's statement that the safeguards are temporary and the US Steel industry should use its breathing space to restructure and (presumably) become a little more competitive in the face of foreign markets.

Seems to be something of a contentious issue......just wanted to see what we all thought about it.

Cheers all

FD
