I am both a parent and teacher that twenty-five years ago had the same situation as you. My eight year old son was unable to read more than a few words. I read to him every day and offered him many different types of genre. I began an intensive search for the cause of his lack of reading progress. I had him tested at the Gunderson Clinic and he was found to have an above normal intelligence but learning language based procedures was difficult. My search led me to the Univ. of Wisconsin, Oshkosh where a program was being developed for children who were dyslexic. I took all the grad. credits that were offered and taught my son to read over the summer between his second and third years. I wanted to know why someome having no issues with intelligence was usable to read and why the use of these procedures worked. I began to look at the brain research to find the answers. I learned that children who have difficulty with reading automatically are visual/spatial learners and children who learn easily are verbal/sequential learners. The type of instruction that is given in a child's academic setting teaches to the verbal/sequential learner. Visual/spatial learners process information through visual pictures and process from right-to-left, bottom-to-top, randomly, and whole-to-part. This biological processing difference creates the need for very different learning procedures. People who are visual/spatial learners are looked at at being dyslexic/learning disabled. I have learned via my many students that they are not LD but are hands-on learners that will not learn to read or spell automatically with the present instruction. If you have more questions or if I can be of help, please send me an e-mail. Mary
