It is not the school as much as if he is making adequate progress towards achieving reading goals, writing goals, etc. If he has an iEP, revisit the goals or work with your school to discuss tutoring after school. Check out the Wrights Law website. I worked with my school to get private 1-1 turning for my son to increase his reading level with SBRI. It worked. As an aide, i have to tell you that in a class size of 30--your child may be in a trige situation when it comes to having an aide to help. A class size of 30 will not not benefit your child. But, a private school must have the supports in place for your child--not just smaller class size. In my opinion, it is about maki g progress--if the child is not making progress based on the data--assessment results, state testing scores, writing, math, etc--then use that data to have conversations with the school. I am hesitant to put reports cards as data as some may not see grades as a good measure of data--but everything helps.
