Hi JP,

No, you're not worrying over nothing. The tests you described may have ruled out the auditory aspects of dyslexia, but they certainly didn't rule out the visual aspects. It's quite likely that your son's reading difficulties are due to poor binocular vision skills and that he would not do well on a developmental vision skills test.

In the UK, I believe the relevant practitioner is called an orthoptist, but check this page on my website first, and browse the vision information from there, so that you see exactly what I'm talking about. There's also a vision assessment checklist there that you can take a look at. I'm guessing you'll see several warning signs, of which one of the biggest is the strong history of dyslexia in your family.

Vision therapy is the next thing you should check, to rule out the possibility that he might need it. It might even be provided in your health system if you have access to an orthoptist, but I'm not sure of that.

Here's the page to start on: Find a Vision Therapy Provider

I hope this is of some help to you and your son,

Rod Everson
