Hello there,

I am a school teacher in Mexico City. I am currently doing a certificate course on this website (on-line). One of the things I have learnt is that you should read with your son. It should be an enjoyable experience for him (and for you too). He should not suffer during reading and if he doesn't know words you should tell him them immediately without making him guess. This will build his confidence and will enable him to enjoy the story without becoming frustrated. This will obviously take time.

There are also some children who suffer from something called the 'Irlen Syndrome' which affects reading. Children seem to see a distorted printed page from what you or I may see. The glare of the black print against the white background seems to be a problem for these children. It may also be worth while to check this out on line. You could try to change the computer background to a different colour and see if that helps. There is a publisher called 'Barrington Stoke' who specialise in publishing books for children with 'Irlen Syndrome'. The books have an off-white backgound and the print is double-spaced. This may also be worth a try.

I started the course on this website to learn to help some of my students with reading and writing difficulties. I have learnt a lot of strategies and it is a worthwhile course to think about doing as a parent of a child with dyslexia.

I hope this helps.
