Hi Lisa,
I totally sympathise with you. I lived in Australia for 12 years and did a degree in Special Education. I found it incredibly frustrating and naive that in Australia, officially at least, dyslexia does not exist. When I was studying and enquired about dyslexia, I was told that it is not recognised. I felt so sorry for the kids that they did not receive the specialist help that they needed.
Since returning to the UK and working as a teacher, I then had the added problem that although I was well qualified to work in Special Ed, I had limited experience of dyslexia.
I hope you are able to find a solution for your son.
