Having dyslexic teenage children in my household I know first hand the energy we have output to help our children succeed. Sometimes dyslexia can be coupled with other learning issues. In my case the children are slow processors and accommodations like extended time for exams is very important. Perhaps one of the best avenues we pursued was encouraging them to excel in something that the had a talent to boost their self esteem. In my daughter's case it was soccer. She was only reading at a kindergarten level in 3rd grade. We did the tutoring (Wilson learning system) and pushed soccer. The success in soccer (she made the Florida Olympic Development Team) in 9th grade really helped with her self esteem. She sometimes falls back on "I am stupid" but we remind her it takes longer and more effort than some people, but look at the gifts you have athletically. I recommend Lexia for home use an inexpensive software program that starts at the basics and moves to greek and latin roots. Vocabulary can be very weak for dyslexics as they are not exposed to as many words as a normal reader. There is also an SAT prep book for LD students. It breaks down the testing and how to take at a slower pace. I hope this helps.
