I can totally understand how you feel I also have a child that is severely dyslexic. Basicly, all the public school does is label your child learning disabled. They told me we don't know how to help your child we never seen a child as severe as yours. I would always ask do you know of anyone that can help tutor my child no. As a parent I never knew much about dyslexia so I kept researching learning disabled the school never gave me any advice. Now my child is in 8th grade I had him tested he is dyslexic. The school can never say dyslexic because it is a medical diagnosis. Now being my child is so far behind we just had a IEP to have to decide on certificate of completion or diploma. We said diploma they wanted him to be put in a class with the mentally impaired children a class called MICI. Just because your child is dyslexic does not mean they can not learn he has normal intelligence, is very mature and has alot of friends. The problem is his reading, writing and spelling. This has gone way to far but finally I found a place to help him SLD Specialized Language Development Center. They teach the Orton-Gillingham Approach. The school claims they never heard of them but they have been around for 35 years they are non-profit so they don't have alot of money to advertise. It is so sad that this has gone on for so long he could have been helped a long time ago now we have to try to catch him way up. So I understand how you feel if you want your child to learn don't count on the public school system they do not have the funding or the resources to teach your child. They have to be tutored by a outside source I just feel so badly for the parents of dyslexic children that don't have the extra money to tutor their child. They just struggle and will probably always be behind in school because they need structured phonics. Orton-Gillingham teaches structured phonics and a knowledge of spelling rules and generalizations in a multisensory way. So good luck to you the best thing is to keep learning about dyslexia and researching to help your child never give up. Their are places to help tutor your child but don't count on the school to tell you where to seek help or how to go about getting help. I was wondering if their is other parents out there that had a severe dyslexic child that had to decide on certificate of completion or diploma?
