Hi I have a 12yr son with who was diagnosed with Asperger's at 5 and was just diagnosed with Dyslexia this week. my son is typically atypical =even for an aspie and consistently inconsistent. He had phenomenal spoken language very early and always hated anything that related to numbers or letters. He didn't ever sing til he was 5 and would freak out if I tried to do anything with him related to early learning. He scored incredibly low on his Kindergarten tests and was in the resource room for 2 out of 5 days. He made very lttle progress and hated school. I have been homeschooling him since 1st gr and socially he is amazing. I have truly never had any real help. It's been impossible to find info on kids with both. I can relate to parents of autistic kids, and I can relate to parents of Dsylexic kids, but I never find anybody to relate to our life.
He was just tested and scores between a 6 yo and 7.5yo
This is despite having two hours a week of private tutoring for a year. He is not moving at and closing the gap so we are now looking at a very wonderful private LD school that we can't possibly afford. He does get funding from our states Developmental Disabilities Adm -$3000, but I can't use that for school because "that's your choice".
Here's the bottom line to me -whatever he's getting should be closing the gap between him and "normal" kids. Not just progress, but significant, meaningful progress. If you think he's Aspie and Dyslexic, chances are you're right. Everyday is a chance for him to move ahead and you have the advantage of not losing 3 more yrs. Get him tested.
