My son is turning 8 next month, and I feel your pain!
I have a similar problem with being able to get diagnoses for dyslexia for my son, he has many of the traits of a dyslexic and it runs in the family but still nobody wants to give him the diagnoses. I have finally decided that a formal diagnoses is not really what I want, I just want to help my child.
I actually started homeschooling him this year and now have move flexibility with teaching him, giving me time to help him with his various difficulties. Something that is helping him with his reading/shelling and even his speech is the All About Spelling Program, it’s a spelling/reading program that is heavy on phonics. This is helping my son and it is repetitive so that the spelling rules become second nature, and it’s helping him with his reading because he is now able to better recognise what sounds the different letter combinations make. http://www.all-about-spelling.com/

Also a GREAT book that I have found helpful is the Australian book The Hidden Handicap by Dr Gordon Serfontein (how to help children who suffer from Dyslexia, Hyperactivity and learning Difficulties).

I wish you both luck.
