I teach dyslexic children English. However I am teaching 2 kids who have a problem with maths but not in reading. I will try and answer one part of your message: "They are all multiple choice and if she gets an answer wrong, she has almost always chosen the answer next to the correct one."

I noticed this kind of mistake with one of my 2 students. What happens is that while doing the problem she looks at the answers. When she sees an answer that agrees with her working she circles it.What happens is that she has not completed the question and there almost always is an answer in a multiple question which corresponds with the workings half way through working.

An example may make this clear - Bob has 5 pens. John has 8 pens. How many more pens does John have?

Let us say the answers are a) 13 b)3 c)12
My student quite often will answer a)13. This is because she sees 5 and 8 and adds that and sees the answer 13 and quickly answers that without reading the question further.

She has now overcome this simply by not looking at the answers before finishing the question and writing down the answer. Only after writing down the answer does she look at the multiple choice.Try this out!
