Subject: The cat's out of the bag (friend,co-worker support----family fallout)

It was announced yesterday at work I was resigning and leaving Emporia. I knew this at 7 AM because I was on vacation and home sleeping in and the phone started ringing from employees, we'll miss yous, are you sure of what you're doings, will this make you happys, and how many going away parties can we have before you gos,
I appreciate their support even if I didn't get much AM sleep.
I picked up my check today and everyone said they see my personal reasons and also said for some time they saw the professional side and the unrelenting pressures I was under, they understood this need for change.
It'll be tough facing the residents, when we had a major quitting phase some months ago, some begged me not to leave. The good thing about this is that when I relocate, I have an address book of people to send postcards, cards, and letters to and this will help keep me busy while adjusting to a new environment.
The busier I keep, the more productive I am, the less psychological difficulty I'll face.
NOW, as for the family front, my mom and sister are still silent, I know this threw them for a loop, my dad I heard from today, I told him before I was seeking change and it might take me out of Kansas, he said he understood, now I just have to relax and let him react, I know it's not easy for him, it seems everyone in my family has always had this idea of who I am, where I'm at, where I should be, what I should do, it's like their own narrow stereotype version of me. And I've shattered that.
I got the "you really pulled out the rug from underneath me" and "you are the one who has to take charge of your life and decide your future" (well, am I not doing that?) and "I'm not telling one person until you are physically there".
I sent him a nice card today about coping with life's changes and wrote him a further explanation of why I'm making this move, I wrote him before, but I think his shock and anger made it go right over his head, so I'll tell him again.
He and my stepmom want to see me before I leave, and I said I'd try to be down for his birthday on the 16th,
but that I needed their support and this change was going to happen, I'll take concerns, but no guilt trips or harrassment, this needs not to be an ending, but a new beginning, that was up to them.
I'm trying not to be too hard on him, I know it's tough with my sis and bro wanting nothing to do with him,
but I can't be held accountable for their issues or how they treat Dad either. I told Dad I'd keep in touch with him better than I do now.
We hardly talk or see each other as it is.
Thanks for listening,
Bill
P.S. Wish me luck on my home visit before my departure, this I hope will be good, but I can't even give them any contact information yet, my stepmom's hands are still not too tired to pick up that phone and start wreaking havoc where I'll be moving. She has a notorious history for causing damage that way.
