Since we're all on the bottom of the Hudson right now, there hasn't been much activity on the board, but I'm starting to miss you all! I thought I'd let you in on a little musing of mine.
So I've been chilling in Jess and Chris's apartment, and every once in a while I'll pick up a white wolf book and peruse through it. Earlier today I was mining Clanbook: Gangrel for fuel for my "i have protean" daydreams, and I stumbled across some crazy stuff!
First of all, here's Parker's lineage, as near as I can figure it.
Caine
Zillah, Irad, or Enosch
Ennoia
Rhun the Minstrel
Xavier
Lucinde (I can't remember the exact name, but it
started with an L, I think. Anyone else remember
from that DA game?)
Mobea
Parker
Cool, huh? Now for the bad news.
When I originally picked Cliff's name, I wanted it to reflect something meaningful about who he was. I picked "deCalais" because the history of the city of Calais. Calais is a thriving port town on the English Channel, and the French end of the Chunnel comes out there. During the Hundred Years War, Calais was lost to Edward III of England after a terribly long seige (1347, and it wasn't returned to French control until 1558, long after the war had ended. Calais was, in fact, the only city in France to remain under English control for so long. Spain took control of it a mere forty years later, but only held it for about two years. Calais was also the debarkation point of most British Forces in WWI, and it got the crap beaten out of it in WWII.
So I was attracted to the history of the place not only because of my love of Henry V, but also because it has a great history of not really knowing who it belongs to. The fight of those people during those two hundred years to remain French must have been difficult, especially when piled on top of centuries of cultural osmosis, due to it's port economy and extreme proximity to Britain.
In a lot of ways, Cliff has been "conquered" by vampiric society, and I thought that it would be interesting to watch him buckle down for the long fight for his humanity the way that Calais fought for it's culture. Kind of obscure, I know, but it also let him play the cornemuse and have access to the culture of brittany. Whee!
And then I was cruising through the Gangrel Clanbook and guess what! Xavier's last name is also deCalais! That's right! He was even a warrior in the Hundred Years' War! I had no idea of any of this when I first went through the naming process.
So how is that for irony? There's a good chance that not only is Parker descended from Xavier's blood, but that Cliff is descended from Xavier biologically! Crazy, huh?
Ok, enough on that. I hope you're all well.
Love,
Ike
