Yes, hot-metal printers were fortunate that new technology arrived while there were still protections for them in our
industrial law.
However, in 1991 all this was swept away by a far right conservative government that took away reconition of unions,
scrapped all awards (contracts) and coverage of occupations.
These draconian measures, combined with the reduction in
newspaper staff levels through the new technology, saw union
membership plummet and by 1996 the 135-year-old Printing and Related Trades Union had gone, merged with the Engineering, Printinh & Manufacturing Union. Most PTU
officials, including the writer, were made redundant.
I am involved with the local printing museum, Bedplate Press and have five Linotypes and Intertypes to work on -
can still "hang the line" after a lifetime in "Hot-metal" since 1955! Fraternally, BILL NAIRN
