In reply to: Dave Hughes 's message, "Were the print unions too powerful?" on 10:41:00 06/06/01 Wed

The Unions were not too 'powerful' but simply resisted inevitable technology the same as the comps. probably did when the Linotype was invented. Even though I had been out of the trade 10 years at the time of Wapping my initial empathy turned to horror at what eventually happened. The NGA should have faced reality and taken it on the chin in a more honourable manner. Ok we all know what Murdoch is! - and I even to this day will not subscribe to Sky etc. on principle, but there are thousands of honourable gents who lived through the generations and spent their lives as Comps./Lino Ops/Machine Minders/Readers etc. Their memory was tarnished by the final ugly death scenes of the Trade. The Linotype (Intertype) was a masterpiece of ingenuity and engineering like the steam engine. But sadly everything has it's day.
