We used to call these fudge boxes and they used to hold at least 8 lines of type and a number of these boxes could be used together if a big news story broke or there was a lot of late news. It was a very fast efficient was of getting late news in the paper as the m/c crew were forewarned to expect a fudge and were ready to halt the press as the "fudge hand" approached the m/c. This meant that for say a horse race the result could be actually printed in the paper within 10 minutes after the result came over the teleprinter from P.A. or Reuters. Beat that today with all the modern technology!
