In reply to: Prewitt S 's message, "Do People Want Linotypes Any More?" on 09:50:57 06/06/01 Wed

Linotypes and Intertypes can usually be had for free or at most a very nominal price in the U.S. so long as you are willing to move them. I bought my Intertype for $400 USD delivered in 1976 and it's still going strong. I once printed entire newsletters with it but now I use it for hobby purposes mostly. There is very little viable commercial use for a linotype in the computer age anymore except for people like myself who just like the things mostly for their historic value. Part of the reason so few are still in use is that young people are no longer taught how to operate or service these rather complex machines, so there is almost no one in the labor market who can run them. But I still love my 1924 Intertype and visitors to my shop continue to be fascinated and amazed at how it operates. Ed Inman - Jackson, Miss. USA
