Hey Mike,

I happened to see your question, Carding and feathering are the same thing.

When a chase wouldn't "lift" (type was too loose) one would add pieces of card stock between the lines of type the same as one would use
2-point leads. Thus the term "carding." My high school printing teacher, who retired in 1959, "called it feathering."

This was most often used around cuts (metal art mouted on wood blocks,

I have also heard feathering used to describe putting pieces of paper under cuts and type that wasn't quite "type high."
