I'm a little embarrassed to ask my question, but I've got to know. I'm embarrassed because, while I don't go back as far as many lurking on this site, I did begin my career buying my type in hot metal (handset for heads). I'm a Hartford, CT area art director, and started out in 1972 buying all of my type from Monotype and Eastern Typesetting, both great shops, both in Hartford and both long since gone -- but certainly not forgotten.

I recently heard reference to the terms "carding" and "feathering" which I'm sure go back to the days of metal, but am not familiar with. I know there will be someone out there who will clue me in.

Thanks in advance,
Mike
