If the person with the working Pianocorder will let you try their playback board, that would be the quickest way to confirm this is the problem. Make sure the Pianocorder systems are unplugged from the wall, and wait 60 seconds before touching anything. Take digital photos of both boards before disconnecting anything so that you have a reference for how the various wiring harnesses are connected. Make absolutely sure they are connected the same way before powering up the system again. If it turns out that you need to replace the playback board, go to http://dp70.dyndns.org/pianocorder/technicians.html for a list of people who carry Pianocorder parts.
