Subject: Question from new owner of Pianocorder Vorsetzer

I just bought an old Pianocorder Vorsetzer. It didn't come with any cassettes or instructions. It seemed to be in pretty good shape. The only obvious problem was that when I push the "Play" button, the pinch roller doesn't make contact with the capstan. Consequently, a tape ins't transported and won't play. I wasn't too worried about this since I was planning to use Mark Fontana's software and play files directly from my computer.

I put in the cassette adapter and attached it to the computer. I was able to get some jerky "music" for a while... it seemed that I was only getting the loudest notes. After a while, I stopped getting any music, though when I put my ear to the upper part of the unit, I could hear that there was plenty of activity in the solenoids (they were being activated, but not enough to make them actually move). I'm wondering if something blew out, since I thought I might have smelled something burnt. The smell was only transient, and I may have imagined it. Or perhaps the problem with the cassette player prevents proper transfer of the signal from the adapter to the player.

Can anybody offer any suggestions? I am in the Detroit area.
